DSC00700  Fir and Yew Vanity; March 2013

I recently installed this cabinet, still have to add the trim around the doors which help to tie the piece into the space, and there is also a mirror frame. I will add some more photos when its all finished. Before starting to build this I had bought some one inch lumber of Western Yew (Taxus brevifolia), this is a shade loving rain-forest species which is very slow growing. The tree from which these planks had come from had been dead for quite awhile as it had checking and weathering on its outer edges. The wood has a rich dark red colour with a varied grain. I was drawn to use it here for highlights on the edges of the draws, panels for the doors and on the corner cabinet I used a single piece with its natural edge on both sides. All draws and doors have Blumotion soft close mechanisms. Under the corner cabinet is a small touch activated draw. For this commission I wanted to honour the materials and let them lead the design and construction
